TOEFL Scoring

Computer Scoring Guide and Paper-Based Test 

The following are guidelines for investigations for the writing part of TOEFL CBT / PBT scores:

Rating 6 

An essay at this level

effectively addresses the writing task

It is well organized and well developed

uses clear, appropriate to support a thesis or illustrate ideas details

shows consistent facility in the use of language

demonstrates syntactic variety and appropriate word choice.

Score of 5 
An essay at this level

can more effectively address some parts of the task that other

is generally well organized and developed

uses data to support a thesis or illustrate an idea

displays facility in the use of language

demonstrates some syntactic variety and range of vocabulary.


Rating 4
An essay at this level

addresses the issue of proper writing, but may be light parts of the task

is adequately organized and developed

uses some details to support a thesis or illustrate an idea

demonstrates adequate facilities, but possibly incompatible with the syntax and usage may contain some errors that occasionally meaning dark.


Rating 3 
An essay at this level may reveal one or more of the following deficiencies:

inadequate organization or development

Inappropriate or insufficient details to support or illustrate generalizations

markedly inadequate choice of words or word forms

an accumulation of errors in the structure and / or use of words.


Rating 2 
An essay at this level is seriously flawed by one or more of the following weaknesses:

serious disorganization or underdevelopment

small details or no detail, or irrelevant

serious and frequent errors in the structure or phrase using

serious approach.


Rating 1
An essay at this level

may be inconsistent may be undeveloped

may contain severe and persistent writing errors.


Rating 0 
A trial will be rated 0 if

contains no reply

simply copy the theme

is off topic, is written in a foreign language, or consists only of keystroke characters.


TWE Scores 
The TWE score is reported on a scale of 1-6 it is printed in a separate box in the report of TOEFL scores. Do not add to the TOEFL score.
Your TWE test is the same as the essay portion of the computer-based TOEFL.
